On August 1st, 2025, on the occasion of World Lung Cancer Day, the Bengal Oncology Research & Care Initiative (BORCI) extended its mission of awareness to a new generation of leaders. Our esteemed doctors, Dr. Palas De and Dr. Sayoni Bhanja, attended a special program at Surendranath Law College, Kolkata, where they engaged with law students and faculty in an interactive session spreading awareness.
This program was a vital step, not only to raise awareness about lung cancer, the most common cause of cancer death, but also to address the fears and misinformation that often surround the disease. The curious minds of these young professionals were eager to understand how they can combat this illness, and the session provided clear, actionable insights.
Does Cancer Have an Answer?
The key message from our oncologists was both powerful and hopeful.
Yes! Cancer has an answer. Early detection followed by early intervention is the key.
While this may not be easy to implement, the clarity of the message resonated deeply with the audience.
Here are the key takeaways from the discussion with our experts:
Lowering Your Risk: You can significantly lower your chances of getting lung cancer by making simple but powerful lifestyle changes like quitting smoking. While we can’t completely prevent all cases, we must also advocate for government policies aimed at decreasing air pollution to fight this disease on a broader scale.
Recognizing the Symptoms: Being aware of the symptoms is the first line of defense. Be cautious of persistent cough, coughing up blood (hemoptysis), loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss, chest pain, or respiratory distress. You should also be vigilant for any signs of the cancer spreading, such as bone pain, headache, or vomiting. The sooner you seek medical attention for these symptoms, the greater the chances of a cure.
Acting Without Delay: Once a diagnosis is made, it is critical to start treatment as soon as possible. Stay in close contact with your oncologist and follow their advice to give yourself the best possible chance for a positive outcome.

An Interactive and Inspiring Session
The event at Surendranath Law College was an interesting and interactive session. Both the speakers and the audience enjoyed the experience, with the young minds of the college demonstrating a strong commitment to learning and a passion for advocating for a healthier society.
The session concluded with a promise for the future, encapsulating the theme of World Lung Cancer Day.
“Be Strong Together: United for Lung Cancer Awareness.”
At BORCI, we believe that education and community engagement are crucial in our fight against cancer. We are proud to see the next generation empowered with the knowledge to make a difference, not just in their own lives but in the health of our communities.
